How did, the term Indian summer originate?
Some people think that Indian summer is something to do with the Indian's of North America. After all, our Indians did know about that spell of warm weather that comes after the first brisk days of fall. They even had a legend about it. They said that it was a last chance for those lazy Indians who had not got in their winter supplies. The Great Spirit who controlled the weather was supposed to have fixed this last chance.
Indian summer happens in other parts of the world besides North America. It happens in Europe and other great land masses where the westerly winds bring the weather. In England they often have a spell of warm weather after fall begins and before winter sets in, So far as we knows it is the English who named it Indian summer, Englishmen had lived in many climates around the world. They had lived in the Indies where the climate is warm and often misty. The spell of Indian summer reminded some of them of the climate of the Indies, Records show that they have been calling that last chance at summer weather Indian summer for some 200 years. So far as we know, this is how it was first named.
