What do they call an eagles nest?
The king of birds it seems. must have a special name for his dwelling place. His house, is not an ordinary nest. It is a place called an aerie and pronounced either aye‑ry or eye‑ry,
The word comes to us from an older word for nest which in turn comes from a still older word for field, It came to mean any kind of a nest built in a high place, It may even mean a human dwelling built in a high place. At one time it was used to mean the palace of a royal family which, for safety reasons, was often built in a high place.
Eagles tend to build their nests on mountainsides and high rocky crags, This is because they are birds of prey, They like to be where they can survey the landscape and be ready to swoop down on a meal. Other birds of prey also build high nests, It is quite correct to call their nests aeries also.
