Elizabeth Johnson, aged 9, of Lancaster, Penna., for her question:
What does a worm eat?
Walk over a lawn on a damp morning and you can probably find a hoard of Mr. Worm's favorite food, Here and there you will find the openings to his burrow. You can spot them near little coils of chewed up soil, Now look for a shabby old leaf half pulled down a worm hole.
This is Mr. Worm's dinner, He has crept out during the dim dusk and taken home the groceries. He has pulled part of it down into his home, There he plans to take his time eating it,
The little pink fellow is a slow eater. There are reasons why he cannot take his time to dine above ground. The sunlight is too bright and dry for his tender, moist skin, And in the daylight he is far too good a target for the hungry birds.
