Susan Marie Strasser, aged 9, of Roxborough, PA. for‑Her question;
What do moles eat?
The fat little mole is one of the hungriest of animals. He does a lot of work and he needs a lot of energy to keep going. He can eat his own weight in food every 24 hours. Imagine if you had to eat 50 to 100 pounds of food every day. He only weighs a few ounces. But filling that hungry tummy is a big Job. He almost never stops digging for food.
The mole enjoys almost any kind of larva, grub or beetle. He eats .a worm as though it were a string of spaghetti. Though a mole prefers meat, he will eke out his diet with a few vegetables, He eats the vegetables he finds below ground ‑ roots, turnips and sometimes iris bulbs, He works in the dark, and it does not matter that Mr, Mole is almost blind. He finds his food by his wonderful sense of smell.
