Welcome to You Ask Andy

Danny Budensi age 10, of Boston, Mass ., for his question:

What is the largest living bird?

The largest living bird is eight feet tall, His mighty legs can carry him in 15 foot strides, He can run along at 40 miles an hour, He can weigh 300 pounds. He is, of course, the ostrich of Africa. Without question he is the largest living bird.

However the ostrich cannot get that 300 pounds of weight off the ground, He is a flightless bird. His plumy wings have long been useless for flight. The boney part of his chest is not built for flying,

No ostrich ever buried his head in the sand, no matter what you have heard. ‑He uses his wonderful eyesight to spot trouble from afar. When possible, he strides out and outruns his enemies, If one catches up with him there is trouble for the ostrich stands and fights. He kicks out with those mighty legs and can land a terrific wallop.
