Barry Dubitskys age 11 of Rochester, N Y for his question:
What is wood made of?
Most of a piece of wood is made of cellulose, Cellulose is made of simple elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, Men have been able to make cellulose by artificial means, It is used to make rayon, But men have never learned to make it as a plant makes it. A plant has a magic secret recipe for making cellulose from air sunlight and water.
The first step is started on a summer's day, simple plant sugar is manufactured in the green leaves, The stuff used to do this is chlorophyll, It exists in the leaves in tiny bodies called chloroplasts, The leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air around, Moisture is toted up from the roots of the plant, Then the green chlorophyll does its magic, It uses sunlight, the carbon from the carbon dioxide and moisture from the sap to make plant sugar, The unused oxygen from the carbon dioxide is returned to the air,
The simple plant sugar may be changed to starch and stored. It may be changed into cellulose and. used to build cell walls, Each molecule of cellulose is made of six atoms of carbon ten atoms of hydrogen and five atoms of oxygen, Soy wood is made mostly of gas and water, When it burns most of it returns to gases and water vapor.
