Welcome to You Ask Andy

Winona Curtiss age 11, of Yarmou Maine, for  her question:

How did Wyoming get its name?

There is a rich coal area in Pennsylvania called the Wyoming Valley, The Indians who once lived there named it with their lovely word meaning beautiful meadows, They knew little if anything about the coal, To them it was a place of lush grasses.

This tribe of Indians trekked clear across the country to find a new home, They found another place of rich green meadows. It seemed natural to give it the name they gave their old valley ‑ Wyoming.

Of course there is far more to the present state of Wyoming than rich grassland, Wyoming has caves, canyons and cataracts. It has hot springs, lakes and petrified forests. It is the home of scenic Yellowstone Park and is crossed by the proud Rockies, But we still call it Wyoming ‑the big meadows ‑because that's what the homesick Indians named it,
