Sherry Riggs age 12.Texas: for her question:
Are there snakes in the sea?
Yes. indeed there are seagoing snakes. Most of them live in the warm waters of the Indian and South Pacific Oceans. They are unpleasant creatures to meets for they are poisonous snakes.
Sea snakes are especially suited for a life of swimmlng. Unlike their land lubber relatives they have a flattened tail. This tail acts like an oar to propel them through the water. They are expert swimmers and feed on fish. It is hard for them to travel on land because of their paddle shaped tail.
A number of sea snakes carne on land t o lay their eggs though most of this ocean‑going group give birth to live babies. Same of these babies are born and spend their whole lives in the water.
Most sea snakes are fair to medium size. However‑ giants of the group may grow to be eight or ten feet long. All these creatures have the same weakness as the moths. They are attracted by bright lights. In some parts of the world fishermen catch them at night from lighted boats.
