William Dunn age 7, of Portland, Maine, for his question;
Is the grass in Kentucky really blue?
In Kentucky the gentle hills and dales are dotted with rich green trees and velvety lawns and meadows, At first you notice the eye‑catching green of the grass. Then, out of a corner of your eye, you notice a bluefish cast to the wide expanse. For this is the bluegrass of the Bluegrass State,
The grass itself is one of the Poa grasses common in lawns and meadows all over the land and even in Europe. Up in Maine, you may call it June grass and buy it to seed your lawn. It will grow you a fine, velvety lawn, but it will not be as lush as in Kentucky and chances are you will not notice the blueish tinge which gives it its name.
For some reason, this common poa grass reaches its perfection in and around the state of Kentucky. The leaves of this grass are slender and very green, The blue cast comes from the stems and stalks Which are sort of bluefish green, But only in and around Kentucky does it grow healthy enough to reveal this bluefish green cast in the lawns and the meadows.
