Sarah Pentecost, age 12, of San Diego, California, f or her question;
Do continents move?
The distance between Europe and America has not changed in modern times. Or‑, if it has, the change has been too slight to notice. Some geologists, however, say that the continents have drifted to their present positions. When we see how the land and sea areas have gradually changed through the years, this theory of continental drift does not seem too impossible.
However, it is only a theory, a good idea without enough facts to prove it. The continental drift theory suggests that all continents were once one solid land mass. About 250 million years ago, this giant island started to crack and vast sections slowly drifted away.
The Americas :are said to have split and drifted from Europe and Africa, Certainly their jig‑saw coast lines seem to suggest this. Australia is said to have drifted off alone in the Pacific and Antarctica idled down to cover the south pole. There is a lot of evidence to support this theory of moving continents. But there are also facts which seem to disprove; it. We do not know for certain whether continents move or not.
