Where is the Barbary Coast?

This glamorous shoreline runs along the top of Africa from Egypt to Gibraltar, It got its name from the Berber tribes that once inhabited the region. The Barbary Coast is a casual term and you are not likely to find it spelled out on a modern map.

The countries that border on the Barbary Coast are sometimes called the Barbary States. They are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Tripoli. Their names bring to mind the olden times when the Barbary Coast was a rich trading area and a hangout for bloodthirsty pirates.
