Where do you find turtle eggs?
Foxes, weasels, skunks and racoons all make it their business to hunt for turtle eggs. The turtle is a long lived creature, otherwise the slow pokes might well be a thing of the past. For very few of their clutches of eggs are ever left in peace to hatch:
All turtles lay their eggs on land, and necessarily near to the water, Mama Turtle shovels a hole with her shell into sand or soft ground. She may even choose a rotting log or tree stump. Before she leaves her clutch of eggs, they are loosely covered with sand or soft earth. Somehow, the foxes and weasels seem able to smell where they are buried and waste no time in digging them out.
Should you wish to find turtle eggs, however, you must look and look in all the likely places. Another method is to follow Mrs. Turtle on her trek from the water and watch where she lays them.
