Stephen Scott, age 14, of Watts, Oklahoma, for his question:
In what way do gorillas differ from apes?
A willow is a tree and a building is a building whether it is a shack or a skyscraper. A gorilla is an ape, one of the world's 'largest tailless monkey type animals. The gibbon, the shaggy orangutan and the sassy chimpanzee are also members of the ape clan. But the gorilla is the biggest of them all. A full grown male may be six feet tall, though he rarely, if ever, stands or walks erect. His thick set body weighs up to 450 pounds and with arms outstretched he measures nine feet from fingertip to fingertip.
The gorilla is a very interesting character, at home in the dense, tropical jungles of Africa. You might expect such a ferocious looking fellow to be a fierce fighter. But he prefers a peaceful life and battles only to defend himself or his family. He does not even harm other animals for the mighty giant nourishes his mighty muscles on a diet of fruit and succulent vegetables.
