Welcome to You Ask Andy

Dawn Dilley, age 12, of Merrillville, Indiana, for her question:

What is this new flour made from fish?

The human population of our planet is multiplying at a great rate. We are occupying former farmlands and driving out former game animals. Experts are concerned about extra food supplies for the expanding human family. One of the best places to scout is the sea. At present, a mere 2 per cent of our food comes from seas and this amount is a mere nothing compared to the abundant food that abounds in the world's oceans. But our fishing methods are slow and laborious. We need to get more fish food to market, faster and with less effort. Researchers are experimenting to find ways to make better use of the world's fish catch. They hope to save tons of nutritious fish food that is now wasted.

A sensible idea is to process a mixture of assorted seafood in such a way that

it can be shipped to hungry populations. The logical solution seems to be a powdery flour that can be used as needed in various recipes. Some people report that flavor of this nutritious fish flour needs a bit of improving. But there is no question about the fact that fish is one of the world's best body and energy building foods. In the future, fish flour may help to solve the hunger problems of the world's growing population.     ..
