Karen Kolupanowicz, age 10, of St. Catherines, Ontario, for her question:
Who were the first people to make pyramids?
The earth has created almost every shape you can imagine, but it never has built a perfect pyramid. But the pyramid was one of man's original designs. Most likely the first giant buildings were made by the astronomers of ancient Babylon. Some of them had sloping sides but they were not true pyramids. However, the Egyptians copied them and improved the design. They built perfect pyramids thousands of years ago and some of them still stand.
In the New World, the pyramid was invented all over again. The Indians of Central America made huge pyramid buildings hundreds of years ago. Many of them still stand in the jungles. But the Egyptian pyramids were built 5,000 years ago, thousands of years before the American pyramids. So far as we know, the Egyptians were the world's first, and also the world's best, pyramid builders.
