Welcome to You Ask Andy

June Lowery, age 9, of Johnstown, Pa., for her question:

What is Universal Time?

The 24 time zones divide the globe from pole to pole like the sections of an orange. As we cross from zone to zone we must move our clocks backward or forward one hour. From Newfoundland to Alaska we cross four time zones. Pittsburgh is in the eastern Time Zone and when your clock says noon, Andy's clock in California says it is only 9 o'clock. Daylight saving Time also adds problems to traveling time.

Surely these time problem have a sensible answer  and so they do. One of the lines from pole to pole is set aside to mark a noon that can belong to the whole world. This line runs through Greenwich, England. We figure our time zones from Greenwich Time and because it is the same all over the world we sometimes call it Universal Time.
