Robin Trymire, age ll, of Sarasota, fla., for her question;
Where is Easter Island?
This volcanic speck of dry land lies far out in the pacific ocean. To the people who live there, their nearest neighbor seems to be the golden moon, for no island or continent of the earth is visible to them. They call their ocean island rapes nui and claim that it sits at the navel or very center of the world.
In order to reach rapes nui, you could travel westward from Chile for 2,400 miles across the south pacific. A ship from Chile pays the lone island a visit twice a year. The Dutch Admiral Roggeveen found it by chance in the year l722. The day of the discovery was Easter Sunday, and for this reason rapes nui was named Easter Island.
