Welcome to You Ask Andy

William Warford., age l3, of Nashville, Tenn,, for his question:

What causes rabies?

The word rabies is coined from a latin word for rage or fury. It is a terrible virus disease that can strike human beings and warm blooded animals. In his agony, the victim foams at the mouth and madly bites every living creature in his path. The virus is handed on to a new victim in the saliva of the toothy bite. The dread disease is always fatal for animals. In humans it may be cured with long and painful treatment.

Dogs that roam the woods may be bitten by rabid rodents. But there is no excuse for him to get rabies absolutely no excuse at all. Science has a vaccine to prevent it, and every dog should be given his antirabies shots. A person who risks his dog to the lingering and agonizing death of rabies does not deserve a pet. Andy’s dog and his cats also are given their antirabies shots and no bones about it.
