Welcome to You Ask Andy

Jerry Snead., age 11, of Keysville, Va., For his question:

What are atoms made of?

The word atom means something that cannot be divided. The thoughtful Greeks of long ago guessed that matter is made of units too small to be made smaller. Most people agreed with this idea until the age of science. Then it was found that the atom itself was made from particles. These atomic particles were identified one by one and maybe more will be found.

It was soon discovered that the atomic particles form an orderly arrangement, and the atom itself has been compared to a miniature solar system. Its sun is a compact nucleus of protons, neutrons and a host of other particles. Its nucleus is orbited by a number of electron planets equal to the protons in its nucleus.
