Charles Jacob s, age l3, of Albany, NY, for his question:
Can bees talk?
When attacked, they seem to buzz with anger, and on a sunny day the same bees seer, to hum contentedly among the flowers. This, however, is merely a human interpretation, and the bees live in a world of their own. Probing their secrets is a major problem to curious scientists, but there is evidence that the bees can and do communicate with each other.
Worker bees returning to the hive perform elaborate dances to explain to their sisters where nectar can be found. The queen bee makes meaningful sounds. Perhaps we should not call it talk because we do not, as yet, know for sure how the sounds are made or whether or not a bee has a voice, but it is believed they certainly communicate with each other.
