Welcome to You Ask Andy

Daniell Hayman, Age 12, Of Charlotte, N.C., for his question;

Can scientists really tell the age of the earth?

No one knows the exact age of the earth or how many birthdays our wonderful world has celebrated. No expert can say for sure when our planet was created. But experts can figure how long it took to form the lofty mountains and the deep canyons, how long it took the rivers to dump all those salty chemicals in the sea. We know that the earth

Is older than these events, but we cannot say haw much older. Have Uranium and other radioactive minerals been used to date the age of rocks in the earth's crust. Some of them were formed more than 2 billion years ago   which shows that the earth is at least that old. Other minerals seem to have been formed even earlier. The best estimates from this and other evidence suggests that the earth is at least 4 billion years old and perhaps older.
