Marilyn Potter, Age 10, Of Asheville, NC., for her question:
Why do birds migrate with the seasons?
Some people think that the birds fly south to escape the winter’s cold. But There are other reasons for migration. In the north where winters are cold, seeds And insects and other bird food become scarce. Far south, where winters are milder, there is more food and it is not hidden under blankets of frozen snow. But in their mild winter homes, the birds are overcrowded. Come spring, they Spread out and fly back north. They arrive as the new buds are bursting and crops Of new insects are hatching. The northern summer provides plenty of food for the Birds to feed their children.
