Pat Mossp age 13, of Wickliffe, Ohio, for~his question:
Where are the Sandwich Islands
In the year 1778, the Earl of Sandwich was England's First Lord of the Admiralty. In that year, Captain James Cook found a group of lovely islands far out in the Pacific. It seemed natural to name them the Sandwich Islands in honor of the Earl. Later, they were called the Hawaiian Islands.
The islanders welcomed Captain Cook’s, saying that he reminded them of their nature god Lodo. All was well when Cook sailed for North America. He returned to his Sandwich Islands the next year and, sad to say, he got into a fight over a stolen boat. Cook was killed and a tablet on one of the islands marks the spot where he died.
