Welcome to You Ask Andy

Sharon Schnoter, age 9, of Victoria, .for her question:

Your bright eyes must be kept moist and clean all the time. This job is done by your eyelids when you blink. They work like little windshield wipers to wipe away fine fragments of dust and put a film of liquid over the shiny surface of your eyes. This wiping job is done every time you blink.

The moisture for cleaning your eyes is the same stuff .that pours out in tear drops when you cry. It is a salty liquid made in the tear glands which are tiny sacs at the outside corners of your lower lids. With each wipe, a little tear dew seeps up and the eyelids sweep it over the eyes. The used tear dew drains away into the tear ducts and down the nose. The ducts are tiny holes at the inside corners of your lower eyelids.
