Where did the boll weevil come from?
In the year 1892, the southern tip of the great state of Texas was successfully invaded by a horde of insect pests The cotton boll weevil crossed over from Mexico, its native land, and continued to spread across the United States at the rate of 60 miles a year,
By 1933 the descendants of the original invaders were bringing havoc to crops across all of Texas, the entire cotton belt of the Southland and far up the Atlantic coast The insect bores into the cotton bolls, lays its eggs and leaves its larvae to feed there Each female may lay hundred eggs and there may be ten generations of the pests in a single season
