Welcome to You Ask Andy

Jacque Lockwood$, age 12, of Morenci, Ariz,, for his questions:

Does the mockingbird have a song of his own?

This darling of the Southland can sing like a nightingale and from February to August he trills, carols and warbles day and night. His own sweet music is high and low, rich and varied. In addition to his own musical talents, this fellow is a born mimic. He has been known, to copy the songs of 32 different birds 3n ten minutes.

The mockingbird works hard at his imitations. He listens, then copies what he hears and corrects hie mistakes again and again until his imitation is perfect. He has also been known to imitate the barking of a dog and of a rusty swinging door. But Andy says that he never finds a sound to copy that is as lovely as his own sweet music.
