Nancy Warrens age 12, of Mt. Holly, NoCA for her question:
Where did Columbus land in the New World?
The great voyage of 1492 ended when Columbus landed on one of the Bahama islands. Soon after, the friendly natives of these islands were carried away to work in the mines and sugar mills of Hispaniola and the first island to be discovered was forgotten. For many years, Cat Island, Turk Island, Watling Island and several others claimed to be the first landfall when Columbus discovered the New World,
In 1926, the Bahamas legislature settled the problem once and for all, After considerable research, it was decided that the island on which Columbus first landed was Watling Islaride The original native name for this island was Guanahani and Columbus renamed it San Salvador .
