Ted Clausen age 11 of Corte Madera, Calif., for his question:
Was there really a city of Troy?
Yes indeed there was an ancient city of Troy and its history has been traced back some 5,000 years. The site of the famed city of the Trojan war was unearthed in the year 1870. Since then archeologists have dug deeper and deeper into its ruins, No less than nine cities were built on this spot,, destroyed and rebuilt one upon another.
The story of‘the Trojan war concerns the seventh city of Troy. Its walls, 16 feet thick, were destroyed by fire in about 1200 B.C. The site of ancient Troy is in Asia Minor, near where the Dardanelles Strait opens into the Aegean Sea, To the southwest is snow capped Mount Ida from where, says the ancient tale of Troy, the gods watched the battle for the city. For centuries, the city ruins were buried under the Hill of Hissarlik, a mound of debris between the mountain and the sea.
