Charles Edwards, age 10, of Falls of Roughs Ky.,for his question:
Where is the home of the llama?
The full sized animal with the hoity toity expression is a native of South America. The Spanish explorers met him when they reached Peru. The Indians were using him as a beast of burden, They had domesticated him from the wild guanacos who still roam the lonely, craggy slopes of the lofty Andes,
Later, it was discovered that the llama is a distant relative of the Old World camel. Still later, fossil remains revealed the distant ancestors of both the camel and the llama once roamed in North America. In fact, this was the original home of the camel family. Millions of years ago, some roamed to Asia and Africa and their descendants became camels. Some roamed to the Andes of South America and their descendants became llamas. For some unknown. reason, none survived in North America.
