What is Stonehenge?
Stonehenge is the ruin of an ancient circle of great stones, dating back some 3000 to 4000 years. It stands on Salisbury plain in southern England. The stones of the outer circle weigh 40 tons and at one time they were all topped with equally large horizontal stones. Now only a few of the horizontal bars remain in position.
The history of Stonehenge is shrouded in mystery. Archeologists are still trying to learn something of the people who built the massive monument, and why it was built. However, they have been able to figure out how the great stones could have been lifted into position without the help of modern tools and machinery. The name Stonehenge means hanging stones.
