Frank Donnini, age 11, of Portland, Maine, for his' question:
Where does the emu live?
The strange bird lives on the lonely plains of Australia. At one time he had many cousins throughout the big continent and on the nearby islands. All but one small emu cousin on Kangaroo Island have been wiped out. The Australian emu is the second largest bird in the world, about three feet shorter than his proud relative, the ostrich.
The soft plumage of the emu is a drab color and he walks with a stoop. Mr. and Mrs. Emu are devoted parents and Mr. Emu does more than his share in bringing up the children. When Manama has laid the eggs, he drives her from the nest and sits on the eggs for eight long weeks, refusing any help.
