How did Greenland get its name?
The center of Greenland is buried under a thick glacier. Only a narrow coastal region is free from ice. Around most of the island, the coast region supports only sparse, green grey tundra vegetation. To the south and southwest there are a few stunted willows and birches. Potatoes can be grown, but the summers are too cool for any grain cereal to ripen.
Certainly this country, the world's biggest island, is far from green. Then how did it get its name? This story goes back a thousand years to the time when the island was first settled by Eric the Red, an outcast from Iceland. Eric wanted more settlers to join him from Iceland. So he named his new homeland Greenland to make it sound more attractive.
