Roberta Burton, age 11, of Columbia .C,, for her question:
How many eyes does a fly have ?
When you try to catch a fly, you may think he has a thousand eyes. He seems to be looking for attack in all directions at once and it is impossible to catch him off guard. Actually, he does have more than his share of eyes and he makes good use of them.
Those two big bulges which cover most of his head are indeed eyes. They are compound eyes, countless little windows through which Mr. Fly looks out at the world. Since they are slightly domed, he gets a view from several directions at once. In addition, the fly has three more eyes, making five in all. The three others are simple eyes and very small. They are set in a triangle between the pair of big compound eyes.
