Carole West, age 11, of Tucson, AZ for her question:
How big is an eaglets nest?
The nest of the King of Birds is called an aerie. The magnificent American eagle is about three feet long and the wingspread is about seven feet. His aerie must be large enough to hold two parent birds and perhaps three eaglets almost as heavy as their parents. It is built in a tall tree or on a high cliff where the birds can see far and wide.
The bulk of the aerie is a platform of dry sticks and branches, The lining is grass and leaves. The parents add to the home each year with more dry wood. A new home may be about three feet wide and three feet deep. After a number of years, it becomes a shaggy pile eight feet wide and eight feet deep, An old nest may weigh a quarter 'ton. It may become so heavy that the tree breaks.
