Jim Remondino, age 11, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for his question:
Is it true that Lake Winnebago is bigger than Great Salt Lake?
Utah's Great Salt Lake is 75 miles long and its average width is 50 miles. Its salty waters cover an area of 1,500 square miles. Lake Winnebago is the largest of the many lakes in Wisconsin. It nestles amid the forested greenery of the eastern central part of the state where the lucky people take their lush super scenery for granted. Great Salt Lake is bounded by rugged deserts, and these regions have beauty of a very different kind. The great salty lake in the desert is just about seven times bigger than Wisconsin's Lake Winnebago. In fact, it is about 51 square miles larger than all the inland waters of Wisconsin and this includes 8,000 lakes large enough to be placed on the state's map.
Lake Winnebago is 30 miles long and its width varies from five to 10 miles. It covers a total area of 215 Square miles. Actually it is a big bathtub that belongs to Wisconsin's wandering Fox River. The river empties in its fresh water at Oshkosh on the western shore. It drains out the surplus water on the northern shore, near Neenah and Menasha. From there the Fox River flows on to empty its waters into Green Bay.
