Gary Priest, age Up of Victory Mills, N. Y., for his question:
How hot does the sun get?
The temperature on the face of the sun varies, just as it does on the face of the earth. The heart of a giant sunspot, for example, is much cooler than the surrounding areas. It is estimated that the average overall temperature of the sunts face is about 10,000 Fahrenheit degrees.
That is hot enough to turn iron or any other hard material you can think of into vapor. But compared with the center of the sun, this surface temperature is very, very cool. No one knows exactly the temperature of the fiery heart of the sun, but it is certainly several million degrees.
