Louise Eubank, age 10, of Crewe, Va., for her question:
Does Hawaii have any mountains?
We might say that the Hawaiian Islands are nothing but mountains. For they are really the tops of great volcanos. These fire mountains began long ages ago on the bottom of the deep Pacific Ocean. With each eruption, the volcanos built up cones and piles of lava and cinders. They rose higher and higher above the floor of the sea.
At last, some of them became tall enough to reach the surface. Their fiery noses poked above the waves. And still they continued to erupt, throwing up more and more streams of lava. This new material formed the Hawaiian Islands.
