Robert Tripp., age 24, of South Portland Me., for his question:
What would a man need on the moon?
On the moon there are none of the things we take for granted here on earth. Some say there may be some bacteria and small plant life, but not enough to make soil rich enough to grow crops. There are no sizeable plants and animals which we could use for food. There is no water, or only a trace of vapor here and there. Most important, there is no air.
So, if you are planning a trip to the moon you must be prepared to take along dust about everything we take for granted here on earth. You will need food, water and a supply of air. What's more, you will need radio equipment if you plan to do any talking, far without air the sounds of speech will not carry from ear to ear. You will also need a space suit to protect you from the blazing heat of day and bitter cold of nights However, you will need no raincoat and no umbrella, for since there is no air, there is no weather on the moon.
