Welcome to You Ask Andy

Nancy Tennant, age 12, of Chalk River, Ont., for her question:

 What is a helmeted hornbill?

Nancy is a skilled bird watcher and would like to study one of these amazing birds for herself, Too bad, but the only place she might find one in Ontario is in the aviary of a zoo. The helmeted hornbill is a~ native of the East Indies. He is a whopper, sometimes six feet long.

Other hornbills live in Asia, Africa and the Fhi.lippines. They are medium sized birds with giants horn like bills which make them look topheavy. Actually, their bills, like those of the toucans, are made of light, siiry material. The biggest member of the clan is the rhinoceros hornbill who has an extra prong on his oversized bill. The helmeted hornbill outdoes him with a hard flap like a helmet. The bird himself is only two feet long, the extra four feet being tail feathers.
