Welcome to You Ask Andy

San Diego, Calif  for her question:

Is the armadillo a mammal?

The armor plated armadillo looks like a distant relative of the turtle, who is, of course, an egg laying reptile. Hence it comes as a surprise to learn that the armadillo is a mammal. Mrs. Armadillo prepares a soft nest at the end of a long burrow for her babies. The little ones arrive sometime in March or April.

There may be four of them, each a miniature copy of Mamma. Strange to say, the quadruplets will be all girls or all boys, never mixed. They can walk around soon after birth and for several months they follow mamma wherever she goes. For two months they are fed on mother's milk and their armor plated coats do not become thoroughly hardened until they are almost fully grown.
