How do bees select a queen?
Each summer, the worker bees decide to feed a few bee babies on a special formula, These little white grubs are given royal jelly, the food prepared especially for the queen mother herself. These pampered babies are given bigger cradles, larger than the six sided cells in which the other bee babies are brought up, This treatment causes these special babies to become queen bees. The little princesses come forth 16 days after the eggs are laid and at first no one pays much attention to them.
If two of the princesses meet, they fight to the death. One of them may even attack the queen mother of the hive, But more likely, the old mother has already left and taken with her a host of loyal workers to start a new hive, The strongest young queen grows and becomes the queen of the new hive.
