Nancy Wood, age 12, of Newtonvillos N, Y., for her question:
Where is the elephant burial ground?
Many a hunter has gone looking for an elephant burial ground. For there he would find precious ivory from the tusks of many elephants. So far as we know, no such burial ground has ever been found. Once or twice a number of dead elephants have been found in one place, But they perished either from plague or they had been rounded up and slaughtered for their ivory tusks.
Elephants live in hot, jungle country where life goes on at a great rate. In rainy seasons, the vegetation springs up and rots in a few days. The bodies of dead animals also decay at a great rate. Even the body of a great elephant would not last long in, say, the monsoon season of India.
