Chris Campbell, age 10, of Indianapolis, Indiana, for her question:
What is jujitsu?
We learned the physical skills of jujitsu from the Japanese and shortened the name to judo. If you happen to be a rather smallish person, the skills of judo are very useful to know. When attacked, a small person who knows judo can out do a big and powerful bully who does not. The basic trick is using knowledge and know how instead of lambasting an opponent with mighty muscle power. The judo expert knows all about balancing and the weak points where a moving body can be tilted and tipped to its downfall. By grasping the right part of his opponent at the right moment he can use a slight pressure to turn his motion in another direction, preferably down¬ward.
The judo expert does not exert a great deal of physical energy. Instead he uses a little force to twist and turn and throw his opponent's motions into other direc¬tions. This calls for a lot of study. A judo expert also needs regular practice or his mind and body tend to forget these clever skills.
