Welcome to You Ask Andy

Ann McCormick, age 10, of Utica, New York, for her question:

Can my cat see colored ribbons?

Ann's cat is the golden color of marmalade    and like all happy cats, she loves to play. One of her favorite games is chasing ribbons that happen to come in pretty colors. It's too bad, but the gold cat cannot see the different colors of the ribbons. But her keen vision can spot the slightest wiggle of moving objects. This is important to her because she may need to catch a small mouse moving in the shadows. Goldie is a born pouncer who loves to play with wiggly ribbons and such.

Color TVs are wasted on our cats and dogs. So are all the tints of the rainbow. For they cannot see colors as we do. They live in a world of black and white and shady greys. However they can see very well, thank you. In the daylight they can see as well as we do    and maybe notice more slight movements in the scenery. In a dim light, cats can see beter than we do    though they cannot see in total darkness. Goldie sees colored ribbons in shades of grey and loves to chase them, especially when a beloved human friend takes the time to play with her.
