John G. Gilliam, age 10, of Sarasota, Florida, for his question:
How did they bring. the Statue of Liberty?
Miss Liberty arrived on the French ship Isere, in May, 1885. The great statue had crossed the Atlantic Ocean in separate pieces, tenderly packed inside 214 sturdy cases. The precious cargo was taken to Fort Wood, an old army post on Bedloe's Island. This 12 acre isle is about a mile and a half from Manhattan Island and ships pass by on their way to New York harbor. Later, it was renamed Liberty Island. The little isle may be out of sight, but the enormous statue and her flaming torch can be seen far out to sea.
The story began when the people of France wished to pay tribute to the noble ideals on which our country is founded. The statue itself was designed and built in France. Auguste Bartholdi designed it and also chose the place where it should stand. The presentation was made in Paris on July 4, 1884. Building the massive pedestal and shipping and erecting the great statue were enormous tasks. But things were ready for dedication on October 28, 1886. Actually, Miss Liberty is the largest statue ever created and actually her proper name is Liberty Enlightening the World.
