Jerrald 5aulsberry, age 11, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, for his question:
Who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance?
This noble pledge uplifts the hearts of Americans. But originally there was a hint that it was meant especially for young persons. It was written by Francis Bellamy of Boston, who just happened to be an associate editor of a magazine called the Youth's Companion. It was first recited in public by school children, way back in the year 1$92. The occasion was a National School Celebration and the "92" can suggest a hint about what this was all about.
In 1492, Columbus discovered America. In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison called on schools throughout the land to celebrate the 400th anniversary with a show of patriotism. The words of the simple pledge of allegiance recited in Boston became famous throughout the whole country. In the 1920s, the American Legion added a few words to it and in 1954 the words "Under God" were officially added. In 1942, Congress made the noble Pledge of Allegiance a formal part of the code and procedures associated with our National Flag.
