Carol Cox, age 10, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, for her question:
Where is the Arabian Gulf?
You will find it on a map of the Middle East, though under another name. Nowadays, almost everybody calls it the Persian Gulf. But the Arab people still call it the Arabian Gulf. In any case, it is a long arm of the sea between Iran, which used to be called Persia, and the Arabian Peninsula. Its upper end touches the country of Iraq. Farther south, the Persian Gulf pinches to a waist and on the other side is the Gulf of Oman.
Actually, the two gulfs are one arm of the sea and the Gulf of Oman opens wide and empties into the Indian Ocean. The sub continent of India dips south into this ocean and its tapering shores divide it into two parts. On the east side, between India and Southeast Asia, is the huge Bay of Bengal. On the west side is the Arabian Sea and one of its arms is the Persian Gulf. The Arabian Sea is still on our maps, but the Arabian Gulf has been changed.
