Welcome to You Ask Andy

Karen Dumas, age 10, of Youngstown, Ohio, for her question:

Why are the time zones needed?

The earth needs no clocks and no time zones. But people do. Our dizzy old world spins around like a top. Every calendar day it gives each half of the globe a chance to face the sun and then turns it around to the shadowy night. If we stay in one place, daylight and darkness pass overhead every 24 hours. But as the earth turns eastward, these 24 hours march westward around the globe. It is earlier farther west and later farther east. When is related to where. And people need time zones to tell what time it is in other places around the world.

When the sun sets in Youngstown, a new day is dawning in India, on the opposite side of the globe. This is nice to know. But travelers and long distance telephoners absolutely need to know what time it is in other parts of the world. This is why we need the time zones. They slice the globe into 24 sections, one for each hour of the calendar day. When you know the time in your zone, you can figure what time it is in all the other time zones around the globe.

What sort of creatures are tapeworms   for Friday, September 3 , 1971 be swallowed by just the right host is very risky. Nevertheless, many eggs and larvae do succeed. Animals and also people swallow them accidentally with water and infested meats. Properly purified water is safe, so are well cooked fish and other meats.

Rats and mice are hosts of the dwarf tapeworms and these parasite eggs may infect human food. The dog tapeworm uses humans as in between hosts and their larvae may damage internal organs. Another tapeworm lives his adult life in a human host. This parasite upsets the tummy and the appetite, causes weakness and jitters and a loss of rich red blood cells. However, the nearest doctor has just the right medicine to oust all these pesky parasites in a hurry.
