Brad White, age 11, of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, for his question:
Do dogs remember where they bury bones?
Possibly memory plays a small part in this game of hide and seek. But it is not the key factor. It is hard for us to imagine the senses of other animals. And a dog's sense of smell is so overpowering that we would not want to imagine it. That nose of his is fantastic. As we know, he does not need much training to find a lost child. If he gets a whiff of a person's coat or handkerchief, he puts his nose to the ground and follows the trail for miles and miles.
Without a doubt, a dog has a super keen sense of smell. And without a doub the depends on it to help him to pinpoint the spot where he buried a favorite bone. Sometimes, his keen nose is misled other odors seeping up from below through the crumbly dirt. He may make a few enthusiastic false starts. But with patience, he usually sniffs out that certain bone sooner or later.
