Lisa Trumbull, age 11, of Huntsville, Alabama, for her question:
Where do we get mohair?
mohair fabric is woven from silken hairs clipped from the angora goat. This handsome domesticated animal originated in Angora, a province of Turkey. His exquisite coat falls in dainty curls that reach right doom to his dainty hooves. In spring, he is given a crew cut and the longer hairs are selected and prepared for textiles. These silky mohair threads are very strong and springy and some are as long as ten inches.
The natural fiber is white, but mohair absorbs and retains lovely colored dyes. Mohair fabric is light and long wearing. As a natural fiber it is remarkable because it resists wrinkles. Thane goodness the splendid angora goat agreed to make himself at home in America. In the past, we had to import mohair from the Middle East at great cost. Now we clip the threads to make it from our own angora goats, most of whom lead pampered lives in Texas and California.
